Hello
I’m Berit, a data-driven, empathetic UX Designer with a strong background in science and psychology.
My Story
Having many years of experience in clinical healthcare as an optometrist, I am adept at listening to people’s concerns and breaking down information so that it can be understood. Although I’d managed to find small ways to incorporate creativity into my work as an optometrist, such as coding in HTML to create a new medical chart template in the EMR system when the available template didn’t meet my needs, I longed for more. Both medicine and UX design are about finding issues and implementing solutions. I embarked on this alternative career path as it enables me to use my experience, compassion and analytical skills toward finding creative ways to solve problems. I value simplicity and clarity but not dullness. Aesthetics should not be at the expense of practicality, but they are not mutually exclusive. I strive for both.

I have a BS in Materials Science and Engineering and a minor in Psychology. As the child of two artists, a figure painter and a photojournalist, I grew up learning dance and music as well as art. I was a photographer for my college newspaper and my high school and college yearbooks. As an optometry student, I competed in ballroom dance as part of a collegiate team and joined SVOSH, a student volunteer group that performs eye exams worldwide in underprivileged areas.

Outside of work, I enjoy world travel which enables me to meet new and interesting people, experience other cultures, foods and perspectives. I also enjoy playing strategic board games, hiking and many cultural pursuits.
