Recycle your gold and silver and wear it again
July 13th, 2010
I started buying jewelry when I got my first pay check. Over the years I had acquired quite a collection but I was gradually wearing less and less and sticking to a few favorite pieces.
Many of my earlier purchases were silver because that was all I could afford then, and, to be honest, the designs were not that great. Gaudy would have been an apt description. After trying, and failing, to pass on my bits and pieces of neglected jewelry to family, I decided to them in a different way.
I went to a jeweler with my bag of silver cast-offs and asked if he could make me a pin using my own silver. Imagine my surprise when he told me that he does this frequently. He has many customers who melt their unused jewelry into custom designed new pieces. I had no idea that this was something that people did and had been concerned the jeweler would think I was mad.
And now, a couple of years later I have 2 nice pins that I wear frequently. It wasn't expensive at all to have a custom piece made, which was another surprise for me. I love my pins, not just because I designed them, but because of the memories they hold.
If you have jewelry lying around that you know you will never wear again, why not look for a reputable jeweler, and turn them into something new and wonderful.
